The Next Phase of Underwriting Intelligence - Agentic AI

Leading insurers have shifted from a focus on automating to a focus on delegating - to AI Agents.

Much of the early conversation around AI has focused on automation—how many hours it might save, how many workflows it can accelerate. Useful questions, but increasingly incomplete.

A growing number of companies are now focused on something different: delegation.

Agentic AI—models and systems that don’t just respond to commands, but initiate action and learn over time—is entering the operational layer of business. And according to The Economist, it may influence 15% of enterprise workflows in just a few years.

That’s more than just a productivity gain. It’s true operating leverage.

At Kalepa, we are facilitating this shift and seeing the impact up close. AI agents embedded within underwriting teams are already:

  • Scanning inbound submissions to recommend which to prioritize
  • Identifying when production is drifting away from portfolio strategy and making account-level recommendations to correct course
  • Alerting underwriters to patterns that suggest a pricing gap or hidden exposure
  • Providing rationale for why a certain submission should be fast-tracked (or avoided)

The result is something more enduring than traditional automation: underwriters supported by systems that help them apply their expertise where it matters most.

Agentic AI - A Paradigm Shift in Underwriting

There’s a familiar pattern in technology. We first try to speed up what we already do. Then we realize we can operate differently and move to a new level entirely. That’s the moment insurance is in.

If underwriters or operations teams are still operating in a file-by-file mindset, they’re missing the bigger picture. AI agents give them visibility across the portfolio, across time, and across intent. Not just what a risk is, but how it fits the business you’re building.

And when that kind of intelligence becomes embedded in the day-to-day – when it shows up in the submission queue, not in a monthly dashboard – it changes how teams think. They move faster. They make fewer avoidable mistakes. They focus on risk that aligns to strategy, not just what’s at the top of their inbox.

At the same time, having an agentic system that is learning from every underwriter decision means that the benefits to efficiency and quality keep improving over time. It’s hard enough for underwriters and leaders to accomplish everything on their plate, let alone spot the macro trends that can reorient entire parts of the workflow.

This is what we’ve built Kalepa to enable. It’s a shift in how underwriting decisions are made on every submission, but also in how underwriting strategy is defined and put into practice.

We’re fast approaching the point where the firms that embrace the right agentic AI will be on a different playing field than their competitors. And it’s not just about doing more things faster- they’ll write smarter, they’ll grow their portfolio the right way, and they’ll be able to attract and retain the best underwriting talent in the business.

That’s where this is going. That’s what we’re building for.
